1984年6月、山梨県甲府市から1人の女性が忽然と姿を消した。山本美保さん、当時20歳。

消息不明のまま18年が過ぎた頃、北朝鮮による拉致の疑いが浮上し、「その可能性が濃厚!」と判断されるに至る。

"救出"の気運が当然盛り上がり、真相解明の日も近いと思われた2004年3月、山梨県警から唐突な発表があった。

「DNA鑑定の結果、美保さんの失踪後間もなく山形県の海岸で発見された身元不明遺体が美保さんであると判明した」というのだ。

しかしその後、奇怪なことがわかる。家族に示された遺留品の数々は、その遺体が美保さんではないことを物語っていたのだ。

一体誰が、何のために矛盾だらけの "死亡宣告"を演出したのか…。
